We went to classrooms. Had one teacher at a time. Had a predefined curriculum. Standard times, standard circumstances…
This is the conventional wisdom of education. Let’s call it “Education 1.0″.
Salman Khan went one step further and published everything he is literate in on the web for free in a very conistent and professional format. Nobody else than Bill Gates discovered him and his effort and recognized him on his web site.
Soon Salman Khan became famous and was invited to TED to present his ideas and achievement there…
Now Khan Academy is collaborating with the US education system and is experimenting on new ways of re-inventing the education approach. Currently it is to use a mixture of classroom and video content and online exams to teach pupils.
The next stage could be full online education, classroom only for real-life interactions, presentations, seminars and so forth. And a much richer experience in terms of multi-media, social collaboration, integration of other rich media into it and taking the whole education experience into something else, something broader and of more value.
